What is Health Insurance?
Health Insurance is an insurance policy that assists with some or all of your medical and or surgical costs. Your policy can be used to pay for private care in a hospital or from health professionals in the hospital or in their practices.
Depending on the type of policy you purchase the cover may include costs associated with: day-care / inpatient treatment, hospital outpatient treatment, maternity benefits and convalescence.
There can also be a number of additional covers available such as health and wellness benefits, dental benefits, prescription costs, GP visits, health screening and scans and access to high tech hospitals. The right health insurance policy will be tailored to your own health circumstances and needs.
How Health Insurance Works?
There are many types of Health insurance plans available from lower cost options right up to very comprehensive plans. Policies can be arranged for individuals or for families and can be paid by monthly instalment or by annual payment.
Tax relief is available for qualifying health Insurance premiums, and this is given as a discount on the policy so that you do not need to claim the tax relief from Revenue – Tax Relief at Source (TRS).

Health Insurance FAQs
A Broker can help you manage the health insurance selection process from start to finish. The Broker can simplify the process of buying Health Insurance and make it easier to find coverage well-suited to your needs. In addition, the Insurance Broker can compare your current Health Insurance plans and ensure you have the most suitable and cost-effective cover.
A pre-existing condition is an ailment, illness or condition, the signs or symptoms of which existed at any time in the six months before you took out health insurance for the first time or before you took out health insurance following a break in cover of 13 weeks or more. When you make a claim which relates to a pre-existing condition, a waiting period will apply so that you will not be covered for a pre-existing condition during this waiting period. There will be different pre-existing waiting periods for different conditions.
In the health insurance industry in Ireland there is the concept of Community Rating. This is a system whereby a person’s age does not mean they pay a different premium for their health insurance. However, there are some exceptions to this rule:
- From 1 May 2015, if you first buy health insurance at age 35 or over, an age at entry loading may apply to your premium.
- Children – persons aged under 18, where the premium must be no more than 50% of the adult rate.
- The premium for young adults, i.e., those aged 18-25 may be reduced.
- Members of group schemes, where the premium may be reduced by up to 10%.
- Pensioners who are members of restricted membership insurers may have their premiums reduced.
You can pay for your Health Insurance either by monthly instalments or a once-off annual payment.
You may be entitled to tax relief on your health insurance premiums. This is a tax credit given by the Government to ease the financial burden of private health insurance for you. Your Health Insurance Company will deduct the tax relief from your premium, so you don’t have to claim it back from the Revenue Commissioners. Therefore, your premium breakdown should include the tax relief being deducted at the source when you buy health insurance or get a quote for health insurance.
